A Heart-Felt Goodbye Letter From Dee Wilkins

Dee Wilkins, our fosterer and educator in the Colorado Springs area, passed away during October 2003. Dee was responsible for many changes in the care given to rabbits at the animal shelter in Colorado Springs.

Finding all of the rabbits together in an outside pen, where they were fighting, Dee took the injured ones, obtained medical care and paid for it herself. As the years passed, she was instrumental in getting the shelter to provide indoor cages, and better diets for the rabbits.

She was the salvation of many of the 'Springs abandoned rabbits, for whom she found homes. She was indeed their angel.

Just before her death, she sent this letter to us:

This is going to be kind of a strange message. Usually we post our bunnies going to Rainbow Bridge, but I find myself headed there. I guess you can say I'm going on ahead to care for all of them until all of you get there. It does not appear there is anything else that can be done for my cancer, so Dean and I have signed up for Hospice care. By the way, they are excellent. I still feel really good, so we'll take it day-by-day.

I want to tell you how much your friendship has meant through the years and the fun times we've had. Rest assured, I'll take good care of your bunnies. You'll be able to find us all at the Bridge, when the appropriate time comes.
