The State of the State's Rabbits

News from the North
The “northern contingent’ enjoyed coming down to Broomfield for the Bunny Boutique in November. We were all tempted to bring more bunnies back to our homes in Fort Collins and Loveland, but we left knowing that the bunnies were in good hands where they were.

Since July of 2003, we have been instrumental in placing 40 rabbits through the Larimer Humane Society. There were nine euthanasias. We consider these very positive statistics and continue to be grateful for the opportunity we have to assist the bunnies of Larimer County.

A new director has recently been hired at the Larimer Humane Society. We look forward to working with him in exciting new directions to give better care to the bunnies and more education to adopters.

News from the West
Hello and Happy New Year to All. At Christmas I lost one of my long time foster rabbits, Emma. She was a feral rabbit dumped in the country with her partner. A concerned woman contacted the HRS Chapter in N.M., (now closed), about lots of baby bunnies living under her trailer who were being killed by feral cats. When HRS came to trap them, only Emma and one baby remained. They both found their way to me. Emma never cared much for people but at the end of her life she was willing to lay her head on my shoulder and gracefully accept the care she needed.

Life goes on after loss, and in two weeks my foster bun "Breezy" will be going to a new home. Her new bunn mom has a rabbit-proof house, has stocked up on special hays and has her home filled with tunnels, boxes, and toys. This woman lost her two beloved rabbits this year and I think that Breezy has been waiting for her heart to heal enough to have another rabbit in her life. It should be a happy new year for both of them.

I finally visited Best Friends Animal Shelter and spent a little time in the bunny buildings. What a beautiful place the sanctuary is and as with our own chapter, I could feel the love there.
