Special Needs Bunnies*

To our delight, several of our special needs rabbits have homes now.

Griffin, who was a special needs bunny, has found a home as a permanent foster.**

Liesle, a special needs rabbit, was adopted along with her mate, Aspen. Liesle had a severe head tilt. Her new “mom” spent 20 minutes a day working with Liesle using exercises developed by Mike Stein, a Colorado HRS member who has rabbit with head-tilt. Six weeks later, Liesle and her new mom attended the Spring Fling. There Liesle showed off her ability to hold her head with only a slight tilt and to hop around just like any other rabbit! We are thrilled for her!

Unfortunately, we now have more “special needs” rabbits than we have ever had—nine singles and 10 pairs/groups in all. These rabbits would dearly love to have families to cherish, care for them and give them a forever home. (Note: The reason for their being special needs is indicated in bold italics.)

McIntosh and Willow - These are friendly rabbits who require extra care because they are angoras.

Kyla and Mary - These two single rabbits are both so big that few people are interested in them. Mary—big, black, and friendly—has incurable conjunctivitis that requires daily eye drops. Even bigger, Kyla is friendly with people she knows, but she is shy or aggressive with those she doesn’t know.

Carmie, Sugar and Timmy - Beloved of everyone who has met her, Carmie is a 7 year old, mini/holland-lop mix. She runs to anyone who calls her by name, and loves to be held and petted. Sugar and Timmy have joined Carmie, making a threesome. Sugar is a small white and black bunny who is neurologically compromised. She gets around, but looks a bit like the letter “S.” Timmy is a black dwarf with a tan underside, famous for biting almost any hand he can reach. He loves to be petted, and allows certain people to pick him up. He is special needs because he is 8 years old.

Leia and Yoda - This adorable pair was adopted from us when they were quite young, and were returned recently because their person was moving back home to Scotland. Yoda, a small, black lop with a Holland lop personality, is now 8 years old. Leia is a beautiful Hotot mix (white with black “mascara”). She is now 7 years old. This pair adores people.

Sean and Terri - Sean is a gorgeous red rabbit, who loves attention from people. He has glaucoma in one eye, requiring eye drops twice a day. Terri is an equally beautiful angora, a shade of red lighter than Sean’s. Except for her long wool coat and his glaucoma, this is a pair to die for.

Jeremiah - Jeremiah is a special needs bunny because he is eight years old and may require life long medications. [Read Jeremiah's story.]

Lucy, Aurora, Marla, Magnolia, Radar, Marigold, Clark, Whitney, Polar/Pickles, Scout/Gem, Yoko/Baxter, Richie/Caesar/Beacon/Topsy - These rabbits are all “special needs” because they are white with pink eyes, or have a partner with pink eyes. It is heartbreaking that so many fine rabbits are passed over for such an inconsequential reason.

*“Special Needs" rabbits are rabbits who have something about them that causes them to be less likely to get a home. They may be older rabbits, rabbits who are physically compromised, rabbits with pink eyes, which many people dislike, or rabbits who have a greater than normal chance of requiring future medical care.

**“Permanent foster" is a program where special needs rabbits who are likely to require more than normal medical care due to age or medical history are placed in a permanent home, but their medical needs are paid for by Colorado HRS.
