News from the Sanctuaries

Report from Dave and Lynn
We've had a very mild winter with the least amount of snow on the ground for this time of year since we moved to the mountains five years ago. Of course this means we fear another very dry summer. But the mild winter has meant that taking care of the animals has been a much less strenuous task.

We regret that since the last report, we have lost two more of our bunn companions, Amanda and Pinto. Amanda wasn't with us very long, but she brought great joy to our household. Pinto was one of our first HRS fosters. We will miss both of them very much.

We are currently anticipating the warmer weather so that we can once again get busy with the continuous maintenance of the sanctuary. Our plans for this year include building a new fence around the large animal yard and making additional modifications so that the rabbits can enjoy more outdoor time. We are also making more room available so that we will be able to accept some additional fosters if necessary.

Report from Leslie and Stuart
We have mixed emotions about the advent of Spring. It is nice to remove the heated water bowls and watch the rabbits enjoy the warmer nights and days. But unfortunately, shortly after Spring, comes Summer. And
Summer provides the most challenges for keeping the rabbits safe. The days are hot, 90+ is not unusual. Fortunately, we have a misting system and two large fans help with cooling. The other problem is the insects, mostly flies and mosquitoes. Last summer we installed a "Mosquito Magnet" near the sanctuary that traps and kills mosquitoes. We have two large "Fly Stinky's" set up that trap flies, but we are always on guard for fly strike. We have already had one case of fly strike this Spring. Fortunately, we caught it in time and little Bippity was not severely affected. We lost one bunny this winter. Bingo was a sweet eight-year-old Dutch. The necropsy indicated a blood clot had shut off blood supply in the intestines.

There are only three bunnies left from the original Sanctuary group. For the most part, Felix, Peanut and Trix are doing well. However, they do suffer with some minor “old bunny” problems.

We are looking forward to a work and fun day in late April with the Northern Satellite volunteers.
