Additions

Since our last newsletter, 31 bunnies have arrived at the shelter. (Note: For pictures of these bunnies and others who are looking for a home, visit the Colorado HRS web site.)

Annabelle - This little dwarf-mix bunny is less than 3 lbs big. Elva and Jim Bolin saw her running loose outside, and knew her days were numbered unless they could catch her. Since she was nervous and fast, they set up an open cage. She ran around it once, and then ran into it. Smart bunny! She seemed to be saying, “Hurry, close the door! It’s safe in here!” This little black beauty was probably born in 2003.

Chaco and Ben - Badly overweight at 8-1/4 lbs and over 9-1/2 lbs, these mixed breed rabbits will be a couple of pounds smaller when they’ve been fed properly and get some exercise. Chaco is a pure black, three-year-old female. Ben is a four-year-old agouti male. Both are friendly with people.

Clancy and Claire - This big (6-3/4 lb) black and white bunny came to us missing his upper incisors. An x-ray shows the roots are there, but the teeth aren’t growing. Some of his molars were growing into his cheek and one of his eyelids was curled so the eyelashes scraped his eye. In spite of the constant pain, Clancy always ran to the front of his crate when a person came by. These health issues have been addressed, so now Clancy is pain-free and just as friendly as ever. Claire is a sweet little white mini-rex (5 lb), with black and gold spots. Both were born around 2001.

Cocoa - What a lovely, friendly little bunny Cocoa is! Barely hitting 4 lbs, this brown and white Dutch mix eagerly greets people, anxious to be loved on. She is now paired with Donnelly who is just slightly larger than she is. DOB: 2003

Duchess - What a big sweetheart! And what a sad story… Someone dumped this beautiful black rex on our doorstep. She was probably born in 1997, so she’s no Spring chicken. (Of course not, she’s a rabbit!) In spite of her poor nutritional condition and ear mites, Duchess has proven to be a very gentle, friendly rabbit. She hopes there is an older gentlebunn out there who will court her soon, and take her home with him.

Flitta and Jupiter - Placed with people who didn’t know how to socialize them, Flitta and Jupiter, both mini-lops, came back to us, and immediately proved themselves friendly with a family of four children who were looking at various pairs. Jupiter, grey in color, is typical of the “Pueblo rabbits” who are all somewhat standoffish, but have become beloved by those whose adoptions have been successful. Flitta is a cute little white and black bunny who is friendly with people, but if given the opportunity, prefers to explore a home. Flitta was born in 1999, Jupiter, on April 9, 2001. Each weighs less than 6 lbs.

Gidget - Born in Oct, 2003, this 5 lb, agouti-colored mixed-breed rabbit is still growing. A very friendly young lady, she’s eager for a home where she can kick up her heals, and a hus-bunn to snuggle with during quieter moments.

Jenna - Jenna is a 6-1/2 lb. mixed-breed bunny with Californian markings (i.e., white with dark “points”: nose, ears, tail, and feet). She was probably born in late 2002. A little cautious with people, at first, but she’s becoming more confident, and learning that people’s hands feel really good.

Leia – This, 9-1/2 lb. standard chinchilla female, born in May of 1999, is one big armful of love. She might starve to death before moving if you pet her long enough. However, she is also very strong-willed. She needs a hus-bunn who won’t let her bully him, and a person who won’t let her take over.

Lucy and Charlie - Lucy was adopted from us nearly ten years ago. When she lost her first hus-bunn, she came back to us and met Charlie. The pair have been happy house-rabbits, beloved and well cared for all their lives. Disaster struck for them and their mom, when a baby was born who was allergic to the rabbits, and actually stopped breathing one night. Obviously, it was critical to move the rabbits from the house immediately, but it was done with many tears and a deep hope that someone would provide them with a loving home for their elder years. These two are wonderful house-rabbits and fully trained. Please let us know if you can become their “permanent foster”.

Mickey and Mahala - A sweet pair, born around 2001, these two came to us from another shelter, where Mickey was said to lunge at people. He has never lunged at anyone here. We did find, and treat, a papilloma (a growth caused by the same virus that causes warts) on his anus and treated it. Perhaps his discomfort was all that was wrong. In any case, these two are very gentle, loving rabbits whose lives are complete except for a home and family of their own.

Paddy - A cute little mini-lop on the small side (under 6 lbs), Paddy wears a dark burnt-sienna coat tinged with dark grey. Friendly, adorable, lonely, and still young (DOB: probably 2001), Paddy will make some little girl-bunn and her family very happy.

Rudy - Just over 5 lbs., this cute little mixed-breed guy came to us from a local shelter. Solid black except for a white nose, Rudy is a friendly little mix-breed rabbit, eager to meet a girl-bunn and her family. He’s still young, born around 2002.

Skittles – What is cuter than a half-grown mini-lop? Skittles is a white and taupe mini-lop, weighing a bit over 4 lbs (and growing), born in late 2003. Adorable, friendly, curious . . . are there any positive adjectives that don’t apply to this little rascal?

Spotty - You never guess that Spotty was born in 1995. Barely over 6 lbs, this little white and black mini-lop is still highly active. A friendly little guy, Spotty seems to think he will live forever. And he just might!

Sugar – Born in October 2003, Sugar is a lovely blue Dutch, weighing only 3-3/4 lbs. She is enormously relieved to no longer be in the outdoor hutch she had been living in. Typical of the Dutch breed, Sugar is everything people want in a rabbit—friendly, funny, and full of zest for life.

Tiffany - Beautiful, dark mahogany is the color of Tiffany’s coat. A sweet little mini-rex who's not quite 5 lbs, this little girl and her sister Grace were left in a carrier on the doorstep of a house from which the people had moved. Fortunately, the Harrell youngsters found them and took them to their mother, Heidi, one of our “permanent foster” parents. (DOB: Probably 2003)

Tilly - Tilly, a beautiful, red mini-rex, is our miracle girl! She was “stolen” by a Good Samaritan who found her lying on her left side in filth, unable to move, and hours from death by starvation and exposure. Knowing she needed medical help, and having no money, he asked us to intervene. Tilly was so badly covered with filth, she had to be anesthetized just to be cleaned up. Her spine is crooked from an old injury, and her left back leg badly atrophied and twisted under her body from a more recent injury. She had abscesses on both wrists and one back leg. There was no hair on her left side. She could not stand or lie in any position but on her left side. A month later, there is only massive scar tissue on her wrists, and new, curly fur is growing on her left side. And most wonderful of all, she is up and hopping! Tilly was probably born in 1999. She has an incredible spirit and will to live. And like most mini-rexes, she is trusting and friendly. Considering what she had endured, that in itself is a miracle!

Vivian - An excellent name for this vivacious, black and white mix-breed bunny! Very active, Vivian loves to run and explore. She’s afraid of nothing. She even enjoys following dogs around the yard. In spite of the “string of pearls” she appears to wear around her neck, this little tomboy is ready for anything, especially a home where she’ll have lots of out-of-cage time.

Zeus and Zoe - Apparently living with people who didn’t know much about rabbits, this adorable pair came to us from our northern satellite in Fort Collins. Initially, they were unfriendly, but in the few short months they were with our satellite and then with us, they changed drastically. Big (each over 7 lbs), comical (each has one ear up, one down), and friendly, these two will make someone very happy. (DOB: Probably late 2002)

The following “Additions” bunns have already been adopted: Benny Grace, Jake McDougal, and Pilgrim.
