The State of the State's Rabbits

News from the North
We've had a quiet quarter and adoptions have been moving along. Thanks to our skilled volunteers, we had several successful adoptions. Some of our single bunny adopters have returned to adopt a mate for their bunny. In some cases, this has lead to the placement of a trio or quadruple as adopters realize how much they love their bunnies. Unfortunately, we've recently had two pairs returned to us. We are working diligently to find permanent homes for them.

We have been busy rehabilitating several bunnies who have come to us in severe states of neglect. Some of our most recent cases include: a female minilop who was grossly overweight with severe urine scald. Her fur was so rotten and filthy that it literally fell off of her bum while we were washing her. She is now in foster care and has just been spayed. We have a minilop male who had a molar spur that was embedded in his cheek. Now that it has been filed down he is in a much better mood! Two male bunnies arrived with incisors so overgrown that they were poking into their nostrils. After receiving medical care they were both adopted.

Although we, as representative of the House Rabbit Society, struggle with the different agendas that sometimes clash when rescue organizations work cooperatively, we continue to be involved in a positive way with the shelters. We are working to build trust and communication with the Humane Society staff members who support our mission to re-home bunnies with people whose standards are as high as ours.

News from the South
Due to some serious health considerations, Dee Wilkins and Sue Crowell must temporarily limit operations. They will be answering phone calls but will not be taking any adoptions or handling major emergencies at this time. Their loving commitment to the bunnies in the Colorado Springs area will be sorely missed. Please send your prayers and good thoughts to them so that they can soon be on the road to recovery.
